Open sour-ce.

I'm very happy with the open source movement. I use quite a lot of free open source software, and promote it whenever I can, on my previous blog (sob) I had a small section on the right column asking people to switch from IE to Firefox. I want to use Open Office.
I also want to use TrueCrypt. The same TrueCrypt that does not work on Windows98.
How come? Why? Yaake?!
Is it not ironic that this software goes to the extent of agreeing to work with Macs (I hate those pieces of shit) and not with 98? When you hate Microsoft (or "disagree with its principles", same difference) you normally say, heck, we don't want users to upgrade (read pay more for not much extra) anymore, once they have the OS, they should be able to continue forever on the same thing using our software that does everything they introduce exclusively for newer OSs.
They want PS2 users to be able to play PS3 games thanks to their software, for instance.
That is when we will bless them.
Is it not? IS IT NOT?

  1. Why do you hate macs? and you still use Windows 98?

  2. Because macs are really unstable, I end up doing things I didn't want to do to my files.
Win98 is my favourite OS, it's perfect for my uses. It doesn't try to do too much for you like XP and isn't a bitch like 2000 or Vista. Not a lot of virus issues either.

  3. Curious - it's all Macs where I work, and they seem completely stable, I've not seen one crash yet. I don't much like them though even so... all those icons, especially when they jump up and down. Computers and me don't go back far enough for me to have met Win98: 2000 either, for that matter. Can't help expecting you to find your way to Linux, though. Seems to happen sooner or later to the people who know what they're doing, which lets me out of course.

  4. well, you are the 1st one i've heard saying that macs are unstable.. i don't own one, haven't worked with one long enough but i'd love to get one.. the only prohibitive thing about them is the price tag.. thats what i think..

anyway, right now my ubuntu hardy works perfectly fine for me.. it does most of things i need to do (for free) :D

and talking about TrueCrypt, this is what wikipedia says:

Removed support for Windows 98 and ME because the author of the Windows 9x driver for E4M (the ScramDisk driver) gave no permission that would allow his code to be used in projects derived from E4M

probably just has something to do with copyright.. not much anyone can do about it..

  5. I agree on 98. It's the best :). The only thing that beats it is Linux (I never used a Mac thou).
I have started using open office these days, but its not as convinient as MS Office 2003. They need to spruce it up more.. Maybe OO ver 4 will be able to compete well...

I am another soul from JS. Was called routine there. :)

  6. The mac I used (for barely an hour) didn't crash but it kept feeling like it would in a couple of minutes. I had to flip over to do some things I take for granted. It apparently behaves like that all the time. Which is why I said it is unstable.

@Paul: Well, 98 isn't very different from XP at the outset. But I like the freedom I'm allowed with my files on 98, for starters. I like Linux. A lot of applications I use for college does not work on Linux so I might not be switching soon.

@Neel: Ah, that explains a LOT. I'm not all that bitter about TrueCrypt. But still! They should do something and get around the problem. I would've done that.

@Routine: Yes, Open Office is great. It needs a lot of getting used to. So I cheat sometimes and work on MS Office.
    Yeah, I remember you.
